New table!

We had a slightly battered old table in our sitting room; it was very useful for slinging all manner of junk into the drawers and the top of it usually carried my crafting overflow as can be seen in the picture below.

Cluttered and battered old wood table

The poor thing was looking fit to be junked so I decided to spruce it up a little. The top was decluttered and I set to work, I didn’t want to just paint it but do something ‘crafty’ and thought I’d have a go at decoupaging it. I already had some printed tissue papers in my hoard but to add variety I pulled out some white, cream and green tissue papers. Some I covered with Moon Shadow Ink – this is a mica based ink – and then stamped images on the tissue paper, some images I gold embossed. Then all the tissue paper was roughly cut into squares and I put similar with similar in pots e.g music and script images in one pot, flowery types in another and so on. Most of the images I used were script, music, birds, flowers and flourishes.

Making a start

The above isn’t a great photo but gives some idea of what I was doing! To attach the squares of tissue paper I used watered down pva glue.

The following photos are of the almost completed table; at this stage I had one leg to complete and since taking these photos (Friday 20th April) I have finally completed it as of this morning!

Almost completed table; just the back right hand leg to finish off.

Close up

As I have finished each section it has had several coats of varnish with the third coat being sanded with fine sandpaper to leave a smooth finish.

As of this morning the final section – the back right hand leg – is now done and except for varnish the table is finally completed! Spending an hour or so here and there this project has taken me approximately 3 weeks to complete.

Thanks for looking šŸ™‚

  1. Wowzers! That is one incredible looking table! Great job you have done. You have worked your heart out on it and it shows.

I remember you saying the grandchildren were delighted with what you had done by calling out the images they found hidden within the squares. Awesome table you have there.

Okay, I think I need a nap now just thinking of the hours you spent decoupaging each square on the entire table, legs and all. Not to mention the varnishing and sanding between coats.

    Love you – Leslie

    • Thanks Leslie. It was well worth th effort and it went quite quickly, just spending an hour here and there it was amazing how much could be covered in that time. Yes the grandchildren hunt out the owls, birds and flowers.
      Love and hugs

  2. Fun idea – a real labour of love though! Great makeover!

    Hi Lynn

Ohh well done, I love the idea of a table quilt. Is that perhaps called Decou-patch?

    Great job though, well done

    • Hi Billie, the effect is decoupage (DecoPatch is the company that sells printed tissue sheets and items for altering. Their sheets of tissue are very expensive and not A4!)
      Thanks for visiting šŸ™‚

  5. Thats amazing Lynn, looks fabulous, well done šŸ™‚

  6. Oh, Lynn!! That’a absolutely beautiful! Do you think you could make me one EXACTLY like it for my sewing room, please? It would be perfect in there! But it would have to be EXACTLY the same as yours! That would be a bit difficult, wouldn’t it? lol It’s a wonderful treasure you’ve created, my friend!
I thought I’d respond here to your question about my altered book. Yes, I’m avoiding my mailbox again! šŸ™‚ You are correct. We remove all the pages in order to fill it up again. I’ll try to remember to take a picture of the book from the end so you can see what it looks like before I fill it up. It’s quite flat at the moment.
Now I’m off to look at your ATC! šŸ™‚

  7. Oh Nancy I’m sure I could do another EXACTLY the same šŸ™‚ Shipping could be a problem though lol.
So you only have the covers?? Do you incorporate the pages into your art work at all? Different to other ‘altered’ books I’ve seen. How do you attach the new pages to the inside? See all yo have done is caused more questions šŸ˜€

    • LOL…So I made my altered book process as clear as mud, huh? I think it is the same as others you’ve seen, I just confused you! Another thing that may have confused you is that the pages I’ve been working on are all blank so far. This particular book just had lots of them at the front. What we were told to do was save about 6 pages then cut 7 out, save 6 cut 7 out. Then repeat that throughout the entire book. Then we go through and glue/sew those sets of six pages together into our “signature” to count it as one page. I’m doing this as I go because I may not want to sew all the way around the pages – depending what I intend to do with that particular page.
Does that help you a little bit more? When I said we “remove all the pages” I was actually referring the just the pages that we removed! lol It is in order to make room for the pages and embellishments that I’ll be adding back in!
Now…I just finished a card for Leslie’s macaroni challenge but I don’t know where to link it to. Does that mean I have to go into my dreaded mail box? I’ll never find a thing in there! lol
Have a wonderful night, my friend! šŸ™‚

      • Aha I see the light now lol! That is the method usually used by those altering books. Thank you so much dear Nancy šŸ™‚

      • You’re welcome! This came into my mailbox as “new table”. I thought that meant you had made another one for me! lol See…we all get confused! šŸ™‚ Did you see my macaroni card for Leslie?
