This, that and life!

Charity Shop Find

Whilst browsing in a charity shop recently I came across a dingy brown box, at first sight it was not impressive but what caught my eye  was that the lid was indented into sections and had a glass protection cover. The box also had two sections – the lid slid open to reveal a velvet lined section with a further part under the middle piece. So I bought it, took it home and left it on my desk for a month or more wondering just what I was going to do with it! Finally I did something!

After removing the glass from the lid I painted the whole exterior of the box in a shade of blue acrylic paint; not sure of the shade as it was one I mixed myself! A script stamp was stamped onto tissue paper in Archival ink using second and third generation impressions; the tissue paper was crumpled up tightly, straightened out and then adhered to the box with diluted PVA glue (white glue). Once the glue was dry I stamped butterflies around all four sides using a range of stamps and various inks especially Big ‘n’ Juicy Mountain Meadow and Hydrangea.

The butterflies under the glass were stamped onto white card with black Archival ink and coloured in with pencils. Then the button box and charm collection were raided to add various bits to the top particularly the area bottom right, here there is a large domed silver ‘button where the spindle for the sliding sections is hidden. The domed silver ‘button’ was not pretty so I disguised it with my own buttons and charms!

I created a flower from a tomato paste tube and adhered that to the silver ‘button’ and then added the butterfly charm which was coloured with alcohol ink. Further buttons, charms and flowers layered around the metal flower.

To finish off I sprayed varnish around the box sides and rubbed gold wax along the edges.

Thanks for looking x
