Sort of mixed media!

First stage

First stage

Sheelagh came up with another challenge on Cardmaking Paradise for our house shaped books and it was to use mixed media and “junk” ; you know all those bits and pieces we collect and stuff into a box, drawer or container thinking it will come in handy one day?ย  For this first stage I used a piece of grey board and various stencils, for some of the stencils I use moulding paste (white) by Farrell and Gold, for other stencils I used Imagination Craft’s Sparkle Medium in Gunmetal – although it matters not what colour is used as it will be coated with gesso later on and other colours applied. It was the texture I wanted. Also added at this stage were some die cut corners that were languishing in a container and some lace.

A few more die cuts, buttons, embossed paper, bits of a paper doily and a paper rose.

Amazing what can be found when all those corners are checked out! A metal bee badge, more flowers and lace, shrink plastic birds, a metal charm, strips of pearl beads and a rather garish owl pendant. All these items were adhered with Collall general glue. Once everything was stuck in place and dried then out came the gesso and brushed over, this piece needed two coats (my gesso was rather thin) and all the nooks and crannies were covered in gesso.

The best bit! All the shimmery paints and sprays can be used! Dry between the different coats/layers. I only had one shimmery spray, a home made one in a jade colour with mica powder added, the rest of the colours were shimmery acrylic paints. I have had these paints for years and they are in small flip top containers with no name on them, wish I could remember where I bought them as some of the colours are running out!

This piece will be mounted on another piece of greyboard and then onto a larger piece of mountboard.

Thank you for looking xx

    • Wow what a stunning creation – utterly gorgeous. The poppy cut outs are so sweet.

Was it a nervous moment when you painted it all over with those lovely glistening paints?

      It would be for me,.

Fabulous Lynn, lovely array of embellishments, the owl is awesome. Love the final colours used. Smashing!

  5. This is great. I love the idea of using all those leftover bits and creating an original work of art. The shimmer paints over the top bring all the disparate elements together.
